The 200 years Commemoration of Sheikh Ibrahim Burkhardt "The Lausannian"

The Swiss Embassy commemorates 200 years since the death of Johann Ludwig Burckhardt (1784-1817), the Swiss traveler and orientalist who rediscovered Egypt's Abu Simbel temples in 1813. Burckhardt also discovered the ruins of the famous ancient city of Al Khazneh in Petra.

While living in Egypt, Burckhardt was known as Sheikh Ibrahim; he is buried in a Muslim cemetery outside the city gates of Bab El Nasr in Cairo.

His Tomb stone is bearing the name: Sheikh Ibrahim El-Mahdi son of Abdallah son of Burckhardt the "Lausannian".
