Thousands took part in the exciting Downtown Cairo Geneva Run this morning that was organized by the Swiss Embassy with Cairo Governorate and Cairo Runners. Participants gathered at 7 a.m. at the start line at Abdeen Palace and ran through the streets and beautiful buildings of downtown Cairo and past the Nile along the Corniche through to Garden City.
The event, attended by the Ambassador of Switzerland to Egypt Markus Leitner and the Governor of Cairo Atef Abdel Hamid was organized to coincide with Switzerland's Course De L’Escalade race in Geneva, the city’s most popular annual sporting event, which was held the following day on 3rd of December in downtown Geneva.
L’Escalade commemorates an event that took place in December 1602 when Geneva was attacked by Savoyard soldiers. It was a fierce battle but the people of Geneva defended their town and achieved victory. The Geneva Run in Cairo was a great opportunity to bring together Switzerland and Egypt through sports, health and tradition.
