Egypt celebrated the official opening of the Suez canal newest extension on August 6th, 2015.

The extension of 72 km was completed within one year and will eventually double the Suez canal capacity within the next year; the extension is 35 km of new channels cut through the desert and a further 37 km where existing bodies of water were dredged to make way for larger ships.

The extension in itself - which costed $8bn totaly subscribed for by Egyptians - is the infra-structure on which plans for developing the Suez Canal zone are underway to create one of the worlds' largest centers for international trade services and logistics facilities.

The festevities were attended by a Swiss delegationn headed by Swiss Vice-President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann and Swiss Ambassador to Egypt Markus Leitner (photo), the second photo is a selfy made by an Egyptian pilot flying over the Gulf of Suez showing the canal extension viewed from south to north.
