Chiclayo - 279 km

Cumm.9,273 km

Sat. June 4 - Leg 04.04

Sullana - 259 km

Cumm.9,532 km

Sherif is travelling faster than I can follow (actually I was also travelling myself).

Day three ended in Chiclayo crossing the 9,000 km threshold, this is where he will turn his back to the Pacific Ocean and say goodbye to delicious fish meals as he will be heading east inland towards Bogota Colombia.

By the end of the day today, Sherif will be already over 1,000 km away from Lima and his destination Sullana is the last stop before crossing the border to Ecuador tomorrow.

I thought I left the strong winds in (3000 km's) south & mid Argentina (Patagonia).
Well here they are again ... over 17 knots (+/- 30 kms) ...
An ugly drive with sand and wind all around me ...

يعنى موسم الخماسين كدة ..Here in Latin America ...

A few hundred km's left to the borders of Ecuador ...

Sunday June 5 - Leg 04.05

Loja - 329 km

Cumm.9,861 km

Monday June 6 - Leg 04.06

Cuenca - 220 km

Cumm. 10,081 km

10,000 km threshold and fourth country; Ecuador. Lets hear it from Sherif:

Today .. "A day" ... had it all ...
Started early fm Sullana with a short sleep after a night in Chiclayo.
The last city ... consequently .. town in Peru.
Cutting over 130 kms on the Peruvian side ...
I missed the customs of Peru!!!
Just drove past it!!! Nobody stopped me!!!
Customs Invisible and small....
I had to go back to stamp both the passport and the bikes paper.

On the Ecuadorian side it was a long paperwork process until i took off.
Further into Ecuadorian territory it got greener and higher (elevation).
A lot of ups and downs with slopes .. curves and mountain road.
Hot humid it became very sticky ... the speed limit on the mountains is max. 30 - 40 km/h!!!!
All are obeying as the penalty here is extreme.
I thought I'll get used to the curved up and downhill wet roads until this fog kicked in for 30 to 40 kms approx. Under these circumstances i still had to keep the driving time advised. Of course i missed it by 30 minutes.
While driving uphill reaching Loja at 2 225 mtrs i felt the thin air again ... although much less then Cusco (3 400 mts) or even Jujuy and Paso de Jama (4 400 mtrs) .. but with the heat and humidity then fog ...

Anyone wants to switch places ?

Tuesday June 7 - Leg 04.07

Alausi - 184 km

Cumm. 10,265 km

"Alausi" is small charming village with a unique train .. a few km's fm Quito ...

The steepest train drive in the world .. The Devil’s Nose train ..

The ingenious engineering solution was to carve a series of tight zigzags out of the rock, which allowed the train to climb 800mtrs at a gradient of 1-in-18 by going forwards then backwards up the tracks.

Currently, only the 12 km stretch from Alausí to Pistishi (usually advertised as Sibambe).

Very close to Quito ... practically ...
To .. The center of the world ..

coming from .. The end of the world ...

Peter & Didi from Aargau ... Driving the opposite direction by car with girlfriends; Sherif met them in the one and only Bistro in town.

Swiss are undoubtely everyhere.

Thu. June 8 Leg 04 - 08

Latacunga 206 km

Cumm. 10,471 km

Thu. June 9 Leg 04 - 09

Quito 99 km

Cumm. 10,570 km

Heavy rain forced an unplaned stop in Latacunga.

Next day it was the capital Quito with its 2.8 million population, sitting at 2,850 meters at the andes mountains being the highest official capital in the world.

The historic center of Quito has one of the largest, least-altered and best-preserved historic centers in Americas. Quito, along with Krakow, Poland, were the first World Cultural Heritage Sites declared by UNESCOin 1978.

A city view from the hotel room, a little drink in the square to check out the crowds.

Just in time to reach the Egyptian Ambassy where every one was waiting at the Ramadan Iftar table.

From the end of the world in Ushuaia to the center of the world in Quito.

Sherif is standing in Southern hemisphere looking at the Northern hemisphere (actually his nose is already there).
